July 24-28, 2009 Visit – Serious cabin beginning

On this visit, Chris and I put in the remaining 14 post bases for the new cabin.

We rented a post hole auger and a gas powered concrete mixer. We used 28 80 pound bags of concrete.

The weather on Saturday varied from drizzle to heavy rain, and the work site soon became very muddy. The clay soil from the holes, when wet, stuck to shoes and we often had to scrape off several inches of gooey clay.

Sunday was much better, warmer and humid, but a nice breeze.

On Monday and Tuesday, I cut more grapevines in the back 20 acres and put up property line markers on about 1100 feet on the north border.

The algae in the pond has cleared. I think it may have just sunk to the bottom. It looks much better, though. The pond level is below the overflow pipe for the first time this year.

Our stream is still flowing, as is the spring. Most years, these dry up about this time.

The pasture is finally dry. I tried, unsuccessfully, to find the seedlings we planted this spring. As the seedlings may be 24″ high, the golden rod and other plants are considerable higher.

I saw a new wild flower in the pasture. When I got home, I researched and discovered that we now have Spotted Knapweed, which is a very invasive plant. I suspect seeds were tracked in on the excavation equipment used to construct the pond last year.
