May 15-16, 2004 Visit

Chris and I traveled to Sharpsburg and spent part of two days clearing the fallen trees and new brush growth from the driveway. We also made a good start at cleaning out the drainage ditches in the worst areas.
We did take time to hike around the fence lines. The fences are mostly gone, but traces of barbwire can be found on the ground and where the fence was nailed to trees.
I took more pictures to be posted to this site later.
There was a lot of rain on Saturday, Wally offered to let us sleep in the farmhouse he is remodeling. We accepted and were warm and dry.
As we hiked in the southwest corner, we came upon a five-foot diameter tree that appears to have been felled when the property was logged back in the late forties. The tree was not taken because it was hollow for the entire length, so one could easily crawl through this section of trunk for at least 30 feet.
Most of the wild flowers we saw last month are finished now. We did see may apples. We also saw the large broadwing hawk again. Its wings really look ragged; I suppose it is molting.
